Flexible Fund

CARA’s Flexible Fund is a demand-driven component that enables UK embassies and high commissions across the Indo-Pacific region respond to what countries need to build climate resilience. Managed by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the grants channelled through the Flexible Fund supports a diverse range of organisations to deliver targeted adaptation projects that protect nature and improve the well-being and resilience of communities.

Since 2023, CARA Flexible Fund projects have delivered results by working closely with local partners with deep expertise and links with the people and landscapes they’re working to benefit. Even though these are short-duration projects, they are documenting invaluable knowledge about adaptation needs across a wide swathe of issues from water insecurity in Sri Lanka, flood management in the Lower Mekong Basin to community-led conservation of fragile marine ecosystems in the Pacific.

The Flexible Fund is designed to:
  • Respond quickly to climate priorities identified by governments across the Indo-Pacific.
  • Deploy UK expertise and address gaps in existing support for countries affected by the climate crisis.
  • Allow for greater thematic flexibility, including support for biodiversity priorities and nature-based solutions.
  • Pilot innovative solutions by empowering civil society organisations with deep local expertise.
  • Enable cross-boundary or multi-country initiatives to address shared challenges such as air and water.
